Start at the bed — about 85% of bed bugs are found in or near it, specifically the mattress seams, box spring, bed frame and headboard. Check crevices as small as the width of a credit card. If nothing turns up there, extend the check to upholstered furniture, behind the headboard where it meets the wall, and luggage racks, since the other 15% concentrate in nearby furniture and cracks.

What actually confirms bed bugs are present?
The insects themselves or their physical signs — fecal spots, blood spots, egg cases, or shed skins — per CDC and EPA. A sweet, musty odor is also a documented sign. There's no shortcut past this: visible dermal reactions on a person are explicitly not a diagnostic tool, per UC IPM Pest Notes, since several pests bite and reactions vary.
Is this only a problem in cheap hotels?
No. UC IPM's extension research is direct: bed bugs "can now be found even in the finest hotel and living accommodations," a resurgence the research attributes to increased global travel and commerce, ease of movement of infested items between locations, and widespread insecticide resistance — not to cleanliness or room class.

How far can bed bugs travel from where they start?
CDC and EPA note they can travel over 100 feet in a single night, though they tend to live within about 8 feet of where people actually sleep. In a hotel, that means an infestation in one room's headboard or luggage rack is a realistic risk even if the room otherwise looks clean.
